Devolver Digital's $5 GTA 6 counter-pick is a fake remaster of a game that never existed

Devolver Digital is launching Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed on November 19 — the exact same day as GTA 6 — and the whole thing is a joke that also happens to be a real game. Billed as a "remaster of the second remake of the original monochrome action-platformer starring the most famous video game mascot of all time," essentially none of that is true: the original Volvy's Adventure doesn't exist, this isn't a remaster, and Volvy is very much not the most famous mascot of all time.

What it actually is: a Game Boy Color-style 2D platformer developed by Doinksoft — the studio behind Gato Roboto and Gunbrella — and coming to Steam for $5. Volvy himself is a rat-ish creature with one comically oversized hand and one tiny one. He dashes, jumps, collects onions, bounces off enemies, and fights bosses. He can also punch through the air with his giant fist, burrow underground, or helicopter around using his tail — and the debut trailer shows those abilities chaining together into something that looks genuinely kinetic. When things get tough, Volvy transforms into Swolvy, a hulked-out alter-ego built for smashing.

Doinksoft has a track record of tight, stylish 2D games — Gato Roboto was a Metroidvania starring a cat in a mech suit, and Gunbrella leaned into noir action-platforming. Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed fits that same mold: small scope, strong aesthetic, and a clear love of a specific era of gaming. The Game Boy Color framing gives it a vibrant pixel art style and a punchy soundtrack that the trailer leans into hard. At $5, it's positioned as exactly the kind of counterprogramming Devolver does well — weird, cheap, and confident.

Volvy won't be the only one brave enough to ship against GTA 6 that day: The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ Online, a port adding online co-op to the beloved roguelike, is also dropping November 19. GTA 6 launches at $80 (or $100 for premium editions) and skips PC at launch, so there's a real gap in the market for people who want something to play that day without spending a hundred dollars on an open-world crime simulator.
