Dragonlance: War Wizard is a new prequel novel from Weis and Hickman, out August 2026

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are returning to Dragonlance with War Wizard, a prequel novel publishing August 4, 2026 through Random House Worlds. IGN has an exclusive excerpt from the book.

War Wizard is set before the original Dragonlance Chronicles, during the Third Dragon War. It follows the early years of Huma Dragonbane and Magius — two characters who would go on to become legends in Solamnic history. The story is a coming-of-age tale about an unlikely friendship: Huma is training for the knighthood in a nation that despises magic, while Magius is a boy born with a rare gift for it, persecuted by his father and threatened with exile by the knights. The official blurb frames the whole thing around how that bond, forged under pressure, would eventually help defeat the Queen of Darkness. The excerpt IGN published puts the two young heroes face-to-face with a doppelganger — one of D&D's shapeshifting assassins — and Weis told IGN the scene was "a lot of fun to write," noting that doppelgangers are magic resistant, which Magius "sadly discovers."

Dragonlance started as a Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting, and Dragons of Autumn Twilight — the first Chronicles novel — came out in 1984. Weis and Hickman built one of fantasy fiction's most beloved series across the Chronicles and Legends trilogies, and the world has remained a touchstone for readers who came of age in the late 1980s and 1990s. War Wizard marks their return to the setting roughly 40 years after that debut, digging into mythology that longtime fans will recognize — Huma Dragonbane is one of the most storied figures in Dragonlance lore — while telling a story set well before the events most readers know.
