Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Gets a Director, a New Region, and a Dragonsplague Fix

Capcom's latest Spotlight showcase gave Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen its most substantial look yet — a release date of October 9, 2026, a confirmed director, and a stack of new gameplay details. The expansion was first announced during the Nintendo Showcase on June 9, but this showcase went much deeper.

Kento Kinoshita is directing Dark Arisen, and that's a big deal. Series creator Hideaki Itsuno left Capcom in August 2024, five months after Dragon's Dogma 2 launched, so the question of who would helm the expansion was wide open. Kinoshita directed the original Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen back in 2013, and that expansion is widely credited with transforming the base game into something definitive — tighter, deeper, and packed with content. His return for the sequel's expansion is the most reassuring news Capcom could have delivered.

The new expansion centers on a region called Norgan and a storyline built around a creature called the Fallen Dragon, which director Kinoshita says is at the "heart" of the expansion. A mysterious character named Eir has been hunting this dragon for some time. The Relic system from the original Dark Arisen is back — armor and weapon relics are hidden throughout Norgan or drop from enemies, and once appraised they can carry special effects and unique skills. Alongside the new region, the base game's existing map is also getting 12 new dungeons, plus new hairstyles and tattoos for the character creator.

Separate from the expansion itself, Capcom confirmed a free update arriving at the end of August that adds two new weapon skill slots, performance improvements, UI fixes, and — most notably — changes to the Dragonsplague mechanic. The controversial system, where pawns can randomly contract a disease and wipe out entire towns, is getting "treatment methods," including an item called the Dragonsbaulk Draught that cures infected pawns. For players who prefer to let Dragonsplague run its course, Capcom is also adding benefits to keeping it active, apparently boosting pawn damage output. The expansion launches October 9, 2026.
