Dying Light: The Beast PS4 and Xbox One ports canceled — old hardware can't handle it

Techland has officially pulled the plug on Dying Light: The Beast ports for PS4 and Xbox One. The studio announced on July 14 via the official Dying Light Twitter account that the last-gen versions are canceled, and anyone who pre-ordered on those platforms will get a full refund.

In the announcement, Techland was direct about the reason: the game was built from the ground up for current-gen hardware, and the open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal all depend on processing power and memory that PS4 and Xbox One simply can't provide. As development progressed, the studio says it became clear that hitting those platforms would require compromises that would undermine the experience they set out to make. Techland framed the decision not as abandoning last-gen players, but as a reflection of "technical realities of development" and a commitment to quality.

Dying Light: The Beast launched in September 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The spin-off brought back Kyle Crane — the protagonist of the original 2015 Dying Light — and was positioned as both a sequel and a standalone entry. The PS4 port had been on the roadmap since before launch, so the cancellation is a late reversal for anyone who held onto their pre-order expecting it to eventually arrive. The PS4 turns 13 this November, and at this point asking developers to ship on it is roughly equivalent to expecting a 2012 game to land on PS1 — the hardware gap is just too wide. That said, with console prices climbing, not everyone has been able to upgrade, which makes the news hit harder for those still on last-gen.

Techland apologized directly to affected players, acknowledging the disappointment and confirming refund eligibility. The studio hasn't said anything about future Dying Light titles supporting PS4, and given this decision, it's safe to assume last-gen support is done for the franchise going forward.
