Every Star Fox Game Ranked, Updated for 2025

Star Fox is back — Velan Studios' remake of Star Fox 64 just launched on Switch 2, and the occasion has prompted a full re-ranking of the entire franchise. The list was originally published around Star Fox Zero's launch in 2016 and has now been updated with new entries and revised placements.

At the bottom sits Star Fox Guard — a tower-defense spin-off starring Slippy and his uncle Grippy, bundled with Star Fox Zero on Wii U. It barely qualifies as a Star Fox game and is easy to skip. Star Fox 2 lands just above it: technically impressive for its era, it was 95% complete before Nintendo shelved it in favor of Star Fox 64, and it finally surfaced on the SNES Classic Edition in 2017 before reaching Switch via Nintendo Switch Online. Star Fox Zero follows — a half-remake, half-reboot for Wii U that stumbles on awkward motion controls and feels dated even when those controls click. Namco-developed Star Fox Assault on GameCube ranks seventh, dragged down by loose on-foot segments despite some solid Arwing sequences. Star Fox Command on DS, directed by series co-creator Dylan Cuthbert, sits at six.

Star Fox as a franchise has had a famously turbulent run. The original 1993 SNES game was a technical showcase for the Super FX chip, and Star Fox 64 — now remade for Switch 2 — is widely considered the series peak. After that, Nintendo struggled to find a consistent direction, handing the IP to Rare for the divisive Star Fox Adventures, then Namco for Assault, before the long gap that ended with Zero in 2016. The Switch 2 remake marks the first major Star Fox release in nearly a decade.

The updated ranking reflects both nostalgia and a fresh look at how each game holds up today. With the Velan Studios remake now out and apparently landing well, there's renewed hope that Nintendo might finally give the series the sustained attention it hasn't seen since the N64 era.
