Ex-Marathon director Christopher Barrett settles $200m lawsuit against Sony and Bungie

Christopher Barrett, the original game director for Marathon at Bungie, has settled his $200 million wrongful dismissal lawsuit against Sony and Bungie. Barrett announced the resolution on July 8th via social media, saying he is "very satisfied" with the outcome.

Barrett's departure from Bungie was first reported in March 2024. Bloomberg later revealed he was fired following an internal investigation prompted by accusations of inappropriate behaviour from at least eight female employees. Barrett pushed back hard, filing a $200m suit that accused Sony and Bungie of running a "sham" investigation — a "premeditated scheme" he claimed was designed to avoid paying him nearly $50 million owed under his employment agreement, and to deflect attention from the companies' broader business failures. Sony responded by publishing details of what it called Barrett's "predatory behaviour" toward female staff. The case hit a procedural snag in December 2025 when the Delaware Court of Chancery dismissed it for lack of jurisdiction, but Barrett refiled in Delaware Superior Court in January 2026.

Barrett spent 25 years at Bungie, contributing to some of the studio's biggest titles before taking the director role on Marathon — the studio's ambitious extraction-shooter revival of its classic 1990s franchise. The lawsuit played out against a difficult backdrop for Bungie, which has faced significant layoffs and restructuring under Sony ownership, and the Marathon reboot itself has had a turbulent development.

In a joint statement, all parties acknowledged Barrett's 25-year contribution to Bungie and his role as Marathon's original game director, without assigning blame. Barrett said the settlement allows him to "focus on what's next" in his gaming career, though no specific next project was announced.
