Fighting game commentator Koustics bodyslams knife-wielding man at NYC gaming cafe

On June 18, Kofi "Koustics" Miller — a well-known Dragon Ball FighterZ commentator and fighting game community figure — paused his League of Legends stream at OS NYC gaming lounge to physically stop a man who had pulled a knife on staff. The whole thing is still on his Twitch VOD.

According to Koustics and corroborated by professional League of Legends player Gil "Shogo" Meron, who was also at the cafe, the man had been playing Apex Legends when he got angry at the game, started breaking things, and then got into an argument with staff. When the argument escalated and the man drew a knife, Koustics overheard the commotion and stepped in to help escort him out. The man tried to re-enter the lounge still armed, so Koustics threw him to the ground and held him in a choke hold until police arrived. During the takedown, the attacker fell on his own knife. Koustics showed the dried blood on his shirt and body both on stream and on X, and confirmed no one else was hurt.

Koustics credits his background in sumo wrestling for keeping the situation under control. "I kept my cool," he said. "Everyone got out safe and sound, and no one got hurt too badly. It ended up being a funnier story than it could have been." Outside of the FGC, Kofi teaches coding, robotics, and gaming at a school in the Bronx — so the man who bodyslammed a knife-wielder is also, genuinely, someone's teacher.

Back on stream after the incident, Koustics summed up his priorities perfectly: "I'm mad because this was supposed to be my rank-up game. Let's go get this LP back." The Twitch VOD captures the exact moment he puts down his headset and walks off-camera at around the 52-minute mark, then returns about 40 minutes later to explain everything to his friends.
