Final Fantasy Resonance gets a new gameplay trailer ahead of Switch 1, Switch 2, and PS5 launch

Square Enix dropped a new trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance, the HD-2D rebuild of the mobile gacha game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and it looks stunning. The game is coming to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PS5.

The trailer opens with the question "What if Final Fantasy had continued to push the limits of pixel art?" and delivers on that premise hard — classic summons, known in the series as Espers, are rendered in gorgeous HD-2D pixel art that feels like the original developers' vision finally made real. Resonance takes the story of Brave Exvius — crystals, villains trying to destroy them, a ragtag group of heroes fighting back turn by turn — and rebuilds it as a full console-quality RPG rather than a gacha grind. Characters from Final Fantasy's wider history, including Cloud, are confirmed to appear, a holdover from Brave Exvius' crossover DNA.

Final Fantasy Resonance was first announced during a Nintendo Switch showcase earlier this summer. It uses the same HD-2D visual style pioneered by Octopath Traveler, a Square Enix series that blends retro sprite work with modern lighting and depth-of-field effects. Brave Exvius itself ran as a mobile game for years before being shut down, and Resonance is essentially Square Enix rescuing that story from the mobile graveyard and giving it a proper home on consoles — a move that's already drawing comparisons to what could theoretically be done with other dormant Final Fantasy titles.

Reaction from the press has been enthusiastic, with writers noting the trailer captures something the mainline series has moved away from — a straightforward, crystal-and-heroes Final Fantasy adventure without the narrative weight of recent entries. No firm release date has been confirmed yet beyond the Switch 1, Switch 2, and PS5 platforms.
