Fortnite leads PlayStation and Xbox most-played charts — and nothing else surprises

Circana senior director Mat Piscatella posted the weekly active user rankings for PlayStation and Xbox on Bluesky, and the results are exactly as predictable as they sound. Fortnite sits at the top of both platforms, followed by a near-identical roster of live service giants and annual sports titles.

The shared top 10 across both platforms includes Roblox, Call of Duty (the centralised app where Warzone lives), GTA 5 Remastered, Marvel Rivals, Rainbow Six Siege, and NBA 2K26. The lists diverge slightly in platform-specific ways: Minecraft and Forza Horizon 6 appear in the Xbox top 10, while Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and EA Sports College Football 27 rank higher on PlayStation. Palworld is the only game from a non-established franchise to crack the top 10 on either list. When Piscatella expanded both charts to 20 games at the community's request — hoping to spot newer titles — the picture barely changed. Battlefield 6, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Dead by Daylight, EA Sports FC 26, and Madden NFL 26 filled the remaining slots. The only new release in the top 20 was indie horror game Shift at Midnight, and only on Xbox since it has no PS5 version. On PlayStation, the sole new entry was the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls beta.

This pattern isn't new — Piscatella's data has shown the same structural dominance of live service and sports titles for years. The economics are straightforward: games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty have massive installed player bases, free-to-play or low-barrier entry points, and constant content updates that keep weekly active users high. Annualised sports titles benefit from franchise loyalty and the lack of direct competition in their niches. Steam, by contrast, shows a noticeably more diverse top 10 — partly because Fortnite isn't available there, but also because PC players skew toward titles like Slay the Spire 2, Meccha Chameleon, Helldivers 2, and Destiny 2. Valve's own Deadlock sits at number seven on Steam despite still being in invite-only beta and not officially released.

The community reaction to Piscatella's post was telling in itself — people specifically asked him to expand the list to 20 games hoping to find newer or indie titles, and the answer was essentially one game per platform. For developers outside the live service and sports ecosystems, console chart visibility remains a steep climb.
