Fortnite players are spending real money on eBay to get rare Sprites

Fortnite's latest season introduced Sprites — small, Pokémon-style creatures you can collect, level up, and trade with other players. The mechanic has caught on fast enough that people are now spending real money on eBay, with completed listings showing buyers paying up to $100 for rare species.

Sprites launched last weekend as the centerpiece of Fortnite's new season, which also brought extraction mechanics to the battle royale for the first time. The loop works like this: find a Sprite in the wild, level it up, then carry it out through a contested extraction point to keep it permanently. Once secured, you can duplicate it using Sprite Dust — an in-game grind currency — and share copies with other players mid-match. That sharing system is what spawned dedicated trading communities on Reddit and Discord, and eventually those eBay listings. The gameplay bonuses each Sprite provides are modest — healing buffs, brief invisibility, that sort of thing — but the collection screen, which functions a lot like a Pokédex, makes the hunt genuinely compulsive.

The rarity is real. Epic Games developer TofuChris confirmed that since the season launched last Thursday, Fortnite's entire player base has collectively managed to extract just one single Gummy-colored variant of the rarest Zero Point Sprite. Among the hardest to find is a Sprite tied to controversial streamer TheBurntPeanut. Earlier reports that one player who obtained that Sprite had been threatened with doxxing now appear to be incorrect.

Fortnite's concurrent player count topped 2.5 million on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend — slightly higher than the season launch numbers the week before. Epic plans more Sprite collecting events each week alongside new species drops, and based on current trends, expect those new species to hit eBay shortly after they go live.
