Geneforge 3: Detonation hits Kickstarter, funds in 24 hours

Spiderweb Software has launched a Kickstarter for Geneforge 3: Detonation — a remake of the 2005 RPG Geneforge 3 — and blew past its funding goal within 24 hours. The campaign runs until August 13, with the game targeting an early 2027 release.

This is Spiderweb's sixth Kickstarter, and all five previous campaigns were fully funded, shipped, and currently hold "very positive" ratings on Steam. The remake promises a modern UI alongside expanded content: new characters, storylines, abilities, and game mechanics. A new "fuser" system will allow character mutations, giving veteran players fresh build options. Stretch goals are already falling — the first (a new endgame creation) is cleared, and the second at $60,000 adds a new faction. If the campaign hits $80,000, a hidden storyline packed with lore and callbacks to earlier Geneforge games gets added.

Spiderweb is a husband-and-wife studio — Jeff Vogel and Mariann Krizsan — that has been making deep, old-school RPGs since the early 1990s. The Geneforge series spans five games and is set in a world controlled by Shapers, wizards who can create life ranging from household tools to intelligent fighters. Those creations eventually push back against their masters, and the series is known for letting players take multiple ideological stances on that conflict. Vogel told PC Gamer in a 2016 interview that offering a wide variety of races and sexes for player avatars from day one — back in 1994 — earned the studio a loyal fanbase that had never seen anything like it.

Spiderweb's audience is small but unusually committed, and the 24-hour funding result is consistent with every prior campaign. With stretch goals still in play and three weeks left on the clock, Geneforge 3: Detonation looks set to be the studio's most feature-complete remake yet.
