Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime gets first trailer and character art at Anime Expo

Crunchyroll's Ghost of Tsushima anime has a new trailer and its first proper character art, revealed at Anime Expo. The series is called Ghost of Tsushima Legends and adapts the game's co-op multiplayer mode of the same name, which drew on Japanese mythology and supernatural folklore rather than the grounded samurai story of the base game.

The character art — designed by Takashi Okazaki, the creator of Afro Samurai — shows the Assassin, Ronin, and Hunter, three of the playable archetypes from the Legends mode, who will appear as characters the story's protagonist encounters on his journey. Aniplex, the studio behind Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online, is producing the adaptation. Takanobu Mizuno is directing, with Satoshi Maejima and Gen Urobuchi of NITRO PLUS handling the scripts. The series is set to release exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.

Ghost of Tsushima Legends launched as a free update to the base game in 2020 and was later bundled into the Director's Cut. It was a notable departure from the main campaign — four-player co-op, ghost-infested maps, and a tone rooted in Japanese mythology rather than historical realism. PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash said when the anime was first announced in January 2025 that Legends' "fantastical" mythology-based world made it "the perfect canvas" for an anime series, with Aniplex as the right partner to bring Sucker Punch's game to life. Having Okazaki on character design is a strong signal of intent — his work on Afro Samurai is one of the most distinctive visual identities in anime.

With a 2027 release window and Anime Expo buzz behind it, the project is clearly building momentum. The combination of Urobuchi's writing credentials and Aniplex's production pedigree gives fans of both the game and anime plenty of reason to pay attention.
