God of War Laufey confirmed for disc release, pointing to a 2027 launch

Santa Monica Studio confirmed on July 10 that God of War Laufey will be available on disc — a one-sentence tweet that carries a bigger implication: the game ships before Sony ends physical disc production in January 2028, effectively placing it in 2027.

The studio posted the confirmation while promoting its upcoming San Diego Comic-Con panel, scheduled for later in July, which will feature game director Ariel Lawrence, creative head Cory Barlog, and members of the cast. The tweet was a direct response to fan anxiety following Sony's July 1 announcement that all PlayStation releases from January 2028 onward will be digital-only — including code-in-a-box retail options. Reporter Jason Schreier has separately said Laufey is targeting a February or March 2027 launch window, which aligns with the disc confirmation. No official release date has been set.

God of War Laufey was one of the standout reveals of Sony's record-breaking June 2026 State of Play. The game shifts focus away from Kratos and onto Faye — his wife, played by Deborah Ann Woll — following her journey through the afterlife. Jack Quaid also joins the cast, voicing a gelatinous cube companion. Woll has said the concept dates back to 2018, when the God of War reboot first launched. The game is a PS5 exclusive with no PC version planned, as Sony has stepped back from porting its single-player titles to PC.

Sony's disc phase-out has dominated PlayStation social media since the announcement, and Santa Monica's post was no exception — fans flooded the SDCC panel announcement with complaints before the studio responded with the disc confirmation. Marvel's Wolverine has also been confirmed for a physical release under the same deadline. The Comic-Con panel later this month is the next likely moment for new details on Laufey's story, gameplay, or a firmer release window.
