Godzilla Minus Zero trailer drops — nuking the big lizard goes about as well as you'd expect

Toho has released the first teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the 2023 Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. It's short, but it wastes no time showing humanity making another catastrophically bad call — this time, trying to nuke Godzilla.

All three leads from Minus One are back: Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return as the central couple, and Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as the wholesome mad scientist. The trailer picks up two years after Godzilla's first attack, with survivors now facing the monster's return. As for the nuke — it doesn't work. Shocking.

Godzilla Minus One was a genuine phenomenon when it released in late 2023 — a low-budget Toho production that became the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film ever and took home the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, beating out several major Hollywood productions. Director Takashi Yamazaki built the film around genuine human stakes rather than hollow spectacle, which is exactly why the emotional core landed so hard. The sequel has enormous expectations to meet.
