GTA 6 physical codes in Japan expire 170 days after launch — here's how region-locking works everywhere else

Rockstar has updated its official support page with full details on how GTA 6's code-in-the-box physical editions work across different regions, clearing up confusion that started when pre-orders went live roughly a month ago. The biggest headline: in Japan, the download code included in the physical box will expire 170 days after the game's launch date of November 19, 2026 — meaning the last day to redeem it is May 8, 2027.

Rockstar says the expiry is required by Japan's Payment Services Act, a consumer protection law that forces sellers of prepaid digital codes to hold large cash reserves in escrow in case the company folds. To sidestep that requirement, codes must expire in under six months — hence the 170-day window. Outside Japan, no other region currently has an expiry date on its codes. On the region-locking front, Rockstar confirmed that PS5 physical codes are locked to the region where they were purchased: a Brazilian copy only redeems on a Brazilian PSN account, a UK copy on a UK account, and so on. Xbox codes, by contrast, are fully region-free and can be redeemed on any account worldwide. Rockstar published a full breakdown covering Brazil, LATAM, North America, Korea, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia and UAE, Rest of Asia, and a broad Rest of EMEA and Asia grouping that includes most of Europe, Australia, India, and South Africa.

The code-in-the-box format itself has been controversial since Rockstar announced that GTA 6 physical copies would ship without a disc — you get the box and artwork, but the game is a download code. That decision landed in the middle of a wider industry argument about digital ownership, accelerated by Sony's announcement that it will stop printing game discs as of January 2028. The Japan expiry situation sharpens that debate: a physical product that can literally expire is a new wrinkle even by the standards of the ongoing disc-vs-digital fight.

Online reaction to the Japan news has been sharp, with players on X pointing out that retailers will need to rotate stock carefully to avoid selling expired codes. Genki, the Power Unlimited columnist who first flagged the expiry detail, noted that Rockstar may simply stop shipping to Japan once initial stock sells through. GTA 6 is still on track for its November 19, 2026 console launch — no PC release date has been announced.
