GTA 6 voice actor Stephen Root wins Emmy, becoming only the second in franchise history

Stephen Root confirmed his role in GTA 6 on September 13, and the very next day walked away with his first Emmy — making him only the second Emmy-winning actor ever to appear in a GTA game.

Root voices Brian Heder, a drug-runner in GTA 6, a role fans identified before Root officially confirmed it. His Emmy is a Primetime Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow's Bay, an eerie Apple TV+ comedy where he plays the central character Wyck alongside Matthew Rhys. The first Emmy winner in GTA history was James Woods, who voiced Mike Toreno in GTA: San Andreas back in 2004. Woods has three Emmys to his name — two Primetime Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor for Promise in 1987 and My Name Is Bill W in 1989, plus a Daytime Emmy for voicing Hades in the animated Hercules TV spinoff. Rockstar still hasn't officially confirmed any casting for GTA 6, so the voices behind leads Lucia and Jason remain unknown.

The Emmys were also a minor moment for gaming adaptations more broadly — Prime Video's Fallout series won two awards from its 10 nominations, taking home Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and Outstanding Production Design for Season 2.

Root's win adds a layer of prestige to GTA 6's already closely watched cast, though Rockstar's silence on official announcements means fans are still piecing together the full picture from voice recognition and actor confirmations alone.
