GTA 6 pre-order claims are overblown, but Newzoo still calls it the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded

Analyst firm Newzoo has pushed back on viral social media claims that GTA 6 has already racked up $1 billion in pre-orders, calling those figures "absurd" — but the real numbers are still staggering. According to Newzoo's data, players spent around $180 million on digital pre-orders across the US and five major European markets in the final week of June alone.

Newzoo projects that figure translates to roughly $260 million in global opening-week revenue — $180 million from the US and Europe, with another $80 million from the rest of the world. Mapping those pre-order curves against historical sales data, the firm estimates GTA 6 will generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in week-one launch revenue, with a central estimate of around $4.5 billion and approximately 51 million units sold. For context, GTA 5 made $1 billion in its first three days back in 2013 — Newzoo believes GTA 6 will clear that bar comfortably. The firm describes it as "the strongest pre-order campaign ever recorded."

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th, with no PC version confirmed at launch. Rockstar has followed a console-first, PC-later pattern with both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, so a PC release down the line seems likely — which would open up yet another major revenue stream. It's also worth noting that even physical pre-orders won't come with a disc, so buyers are getting a digital license regardless of how they order.

The social media noise around inflated pre-order figures has been loud enough that Newzoo felt compelled to address it directly, which is unusual for an analyst firm. The actual numbers don't need the exaggeration — $260 million in pre-order week revenue before the game is even close to launch is a record-breaking figure on its own.
