Hatsune Miku Teams Up With Grimes, slayr, and More on New Collaboration EP BEYOND BORDERS Vol.1

Dwango has revealed BEYOND BORDERS Vol.1: EMERGE MODE MIKU, a new collaboration EP starring Hatsune Miku alongside a lineup of artists including Grimes, slayr, MOLIY, Odetari, George Clanton, Frost Children, and XAMIYA. The announcement dropped at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, complete with an official trailer — IGN had the exclusive first look.

The EP spans electronic, alternative, hyperpop, rap, and experimental music, with Hatsune Miku as lead vocalist on every track. Dwango is producing it in partnership with Nebula17 through their US Label. Behind the scenes, the production bench is stacked: Grant Boutin (known for work with Tate McRae), VADAKIN (Grimes), MOMBRU (Fridayy), Byrd (Bad Bunny), and Xansei (XG) are among the producers. Songwriting credits include Charles "Scoot" Anderson (Ariana Grande) and Cecile Believe (Charli xcx). Japanese Vocaloid veterans jon-Yakitori, SatapanP, and picco round out the team. No specific release date has been set beyond a fall 2026 window, but a run of singles is planned for summer to bridge the gap.

Hatsune Miku is the world's most recognizable Vocaloid — a Yamaha-powered vocal synthesizer character developed by Crypton Future Media and released in 2007. She has headlined sold-out holographic concerts globally and built a massive community of fan producers, known as the Vocaloid scene, that has been thriving on platforms like NicoNico and YouTube for nearly two decades. BEYOND BORDERS is Dwango's push to take that culture mainstream in Western markets, pairing the Vocaloid format with artists who already have footholds in hyperpop, alternative, and internet-native music spaces — genres whose audiences overlap heavily with Miku's existing fanbase.

Dwango General Manager Gorokiyotake Orimoto framed the project as a natural evolution: "Vocaloid culture was born in Japan from the passion of producers making music in their own bedrooms and on their own desktops, and now it's taking flight on the global stage." Reaction from the Vocaloid community will likely be closely watched — crossover projects involving Miku have historically drawn both excitement and scrutiny from longtime fans protective of the character's roots.
