Henry Cavill confirms lead role in Warhammer 40K Amazon series, Mike Flanagan writing

The Warhammer 40,000 live-action project at Amazon Prime Video has its biggest update yet: horror writer and director Mike Flanagan is on board to write the series, and Henry Cavill has confirmed he will star in the lead role. Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree revealed the news in a financial report, and Cavill followed up with an Instagram post addressing fans directly.

Flanagan and Cavill are already deep in development together. "We have already been working with him to craft the creative, and we're making some considerable advances in story," Cavill wrote on Instagram. He confirmed he will play the lead character but kept the identity under wraps — "who that character is shall remain a secret for now." Rountree noted that United Artists has been brought on board alongside Flanagan, and that the team, having completed initial outlines, "should soon be moving on to script." Vertigo and Cavill "remain involved as they have been for some time," Rountree added. Cavill described the IP to Esquire as "tricky" and "complex" but said the challenge of "putting this on the page in a way that is doing justice to that complexity, that trickiness, and that nuance, is a challenge I'm enjoying enormously."

Flanagan is best known for his Netflix horror work — The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass — and has also written the script for DC's upcoming Clayface film and directed the Amazon miniseries Carrie, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel. His attachment strongly suggests the Warhammer 40,000 series will lean into the grimdark, horror-inflected side of the setting rather than pure military sci-fi spectacle. Games Workshop and Amazon concluded their deal in December 2024, and this financial-report update is the first substantive progress confirmation since then. Cavill has been publicly passionate about the IP for years, previously telling IGN he was interested in playing one of the Primarchs or Captain-Generals.

No release window, episode count, or character names have been announced. The project is still in the scripting phase, so a long road remains ahead — but with Flanagan writing, Cavill starring, and United Artists driving pace, the pieces are finally moving. Cavill signed off his Instagram post with a promise: "As a combined force and with the good folks at Games Workshop we are all working tirelessly to bring you the best, most Warhammer universe that you could possibly imagine."
