Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link intro footage leaks online, fans mourn the canceled mobile game

A nearly five-minute intro sequence from the canceled mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link surfaced online over the weekend, first appearing on 4chan before spreading rapidly across YouTube, X, Reddit, and other platforms. Square Enix has not commented on the footage, so its authenticity isn't officially confirmed — but it's convincing enough that fans are treating it as real.

The clip opens with a squad of spacesuit-wearing characters descending into a dark, watery abyss before being attacked by a giant Heartless. They then launch into the air with jetpacks and strike the creature with Keyblades — a sequence fans are already calling "Keyblade astronauts." On-screen subtitles reference Scala ad Caelum and a "blank era" between Kingdom Hearts Union X and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, which is exactly the narrative gap Missing-Link was supposed to fill. The production quality looks far closer to a mainline entry than a mobile spinoff, which is making the cancellation sting harder.

Missing-Link was announced in 2022 for iOS and Android. Square Enix canceled it in May 2025, citing concerns that the team would find it "difficult to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time" — part of the studio's broader stated shift from quantity to quality. Since then, all Kingdom Hearts energy at Square Enix has been pointed at Kingdom Hearts 4, which got a new Switch 2 trailer at a Nintendo Direct in June 2026 showing fresh gameplay.

Fan reaction is a mix of grief and speculation. Several Reddit users noted the leaked footage seems to confirm that a character seen in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer is Sigurd, based on matching costume colors. Others are hoping Square Enix absorbs Missing-Link's ideas — the astronaut aesthetic, the Scala ad Caelum setting — directly into Kingdom Hearts 4. One fan on X put it simply: "We lost something truly special."
