Marvel's Wolverine gets an M rating — and yes, there will be butt

Marvel's Wolverine launches on PS5 on September 15, and the ESRB has handed it a Mature 17+ rating. Among the expected violence and gore, the rating description confirms something else entirely: "a handful of sequences briefly depict a character's exposed buttocks."

The full ESRB breakdown lists Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language, plus In-Game Purchases. Gameplay involves third-person melee combat where players slash, stab, and dismember enemies with Wolverine's claws — rage modes enable faster combos and slow-motion finishers including dramatic head stabs. Battlefields are described as strewn with torsos and limbs, and cutscenes show characters tearing enemies apart. Dialogue references fentanyl production, and the words "f**k" and "sh*t" appear in the game. The nudity descriptor almost certainly refers to Wolverine himself, since the game stars James Logan reuniting with Team X to stop a dangerous threat.

Insomniac has been signaling from the start that Marvel's Wolverine is a very different beast from its Spider-Man series. The first trailer, shown in June, was notably brutal — gore, visceral kills, the works — and a follow-up teaser introduced Lady Deathstrike and confirmed Jean Grey is also in the game. That second trailer sparked some community debate over Logan's face model, but the ESRB rating shifts attention to a different part of his anatomy. Hugh Jackman famously showed off the same asset in X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Deadpool has made a running gag of Wolverine's posterior across multiple films, so Insomniac is arguably honoring a proud tradition.

The game is out September 15 exclusively on PS5. The only real question the internet is now asking — with complete sincerity — is how hairy it's going to be.
