Melgeek Real81 review: 8,000 Hz and rapid trigger for $140

The Melgeek Real81 is an 81-key wired gaming keyboard priced at $139, packing an 8,000 Hz polling rate and full rapid trigger support. It's compact but chunky — weighing in at 1.1 kg, it's portable in theory but heavy enough that you'd think twice about tossing it in a bag. The overall feel and form factor draws comparisons to the Lemokey L4: small, blocky, and built to take a knock.

The Real81 ships with Melgeek's Honey magnetic switches, translucent keycaps, and per-key RGB lighting. Rapid trigger means the keyboard can register and deregister keypresses at a custom actuation point, which translates to faster movement cancels and more responsive button mashing in competitive play. The design is mostly black with gold trim and a small LED bar in the bottom right corner. Dark gold lettering on the keycaps looks sharp in good lighting, but in a dim room the keys become genuinely hard to read — the RGB underneath doesn't compensate enough, and you'll be relying on muscle memory more than you'd expect.

At $140, the Real81 sits in a reasonable spot for what it offers. The Gamakay x NaughShark NS68 undercuts it on price for 8,000 Hz polling, but sacrifices build quality to get there. The Real81 feels solid enough to justify the price. Compared to Melgeek's own Centauri 80 at $360 — which brings an OLED screen and a lot more visual flair — the Real81 is the no-nonsense option. There are no media keys, but Melgeek's software, available as a desktop app or a web app, handles custom key mapping and RGB configuration cleanly. It's easy to use and the web app in particular is well put together.

Typing feel is decent but not exceptional — the switches are a touch springy and less smooth than the price point might suggest. Keys are well spaced and easy to hit, and the keyboard works straight out of the box without needing software beyond an initial firmware update. For competitive players who want rapid trigger and a high polling rate without spending big, the Real81 is a solid, if unspectacular, option.
