Meta Quest 3 battery explodes in Maine home, fire department warns about charging risks

Firefighters in Frankfort, Maine are investigating a small house fire after a Meta Quest 3 external battery exploded on June 11th. Nobody was hurt, but home security footage of the incident makes it very clear how close things came to being much worse.

The homeowner had left an external battery charging on a nightstand and stepped outside. They heard a sudden noise from inside and came back to find the aftermath. Security cameras on the main floor caught red flashes and a loud pop coming from the bedroom above, followed by four dogs bolting downstairs in a panic. Seconds later, a flaming chunk of Meta Quest debris rolled down the staircase, sending the pets scrambling further away. The Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department shared the footage on Facebook and noted that the nightstand was roughly 14 feet from the stairs, which were about 15 feet long — "just to give you an idea how bad this was."

Lithium-ion battery fires are a known hazard across consumer electronics. Valve has previously warned Steam Deck owners about battery risks when modding, and older PSP units have been known to swell so badly they warp the shell. The Meta Quest 3 case is a textbook example of the unattended charging scenario safety experts consistently flag as high-risk.

The fire department is urging VR headset owners to avoid charging batteries unattended, especially in bedrooms or on flammable surfaces. Meta has not issued a public statement about the incident.
