Miyamoto confirms Mario Galaxy Movie directly sparked new Star Fox and Yoshi games

Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was the direct catalyst for two new Switch 2 titles: Star Fox and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The admission came in a wide-ranging Famitsu interview, covered by Nintendo Everything.

Miyamoto explained that Nintendo evaluates these decisions case-by-case, but the fact that both Fox McCloud and Yoshi appeared in the Mario Galaxy Movie created a natural obligation — and opportunity — to build new games around each IP. In other words, the film didn't just promote existing franchises; it actively greenlit them.

Both Star Fox and Yoshi have been dormant for years on Nintendo hardware. Star Fox Zero launched on Wii U back in 2016 and never made it to Switch, while the Yoshi series last saw a mainline entry with Yoshi's Crafted World in 2019. Miyamoto has long been the creative steward of both franchises, so his direct involvement in connecting the film appearances to new game productions carries real weight.
