MTG The Hobbit expansion reveals new cards ahead of August launch

Wizards of the Coast is deep into preview season for Magic: The Gathering – The Hobbit, the next Universes Beyond crossover set, with a major card showcase held at MagicCon: Amsterdam on July 18. The set launches August 14 at local game stores and big box retailers, with prerelease events starting a week earlier on August 7.

The Amsterdam panel revealed 35-plus cards spanning legendary creatures, spells, lands, and premium treatments. Thorin Oakenshield headlines as a legendary creature built around the set's new Storied mechanic — players unlock extra abilities by controlling three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or sagas, and Thorin grants ward one to your artifacts and creatures. Bard the Bowman and his upgraded form Bard, King of Dale form a combo-friendly pair that stacks +1/+1 counters, lifelink, and token doubling, while Gollum, Riddle Master, Thranduil the Elvenking, and Bolg of the North round out the legendary creature slate. Collectible treatments include borderless Dwarvish-language cards, alternate Book Cover frames, and Scene Boxes centered on Smaug and the Lonely Mountain. On the spell side, the saga Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern recreates Bilbo's Warg encounter, Sting becomes an Equipment card, and Desolation of Smaug is a sorcery that deals three damage to each non-dragon creature.

GameSpot also exclusively revealed two Rare cards from the main set. Part In Friendship is a green enchantment costing four generic and one green mana — whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, you reveal cards from the top of your library until you hit a creature, then either put it directly onto the battlefield if its mana value is at or below your land count, or into your hand otherwise. It triggers only once per turn, but in long games it can convert a sacrificed 1/1 into a massive threat. The second card is The Master of Lake-town, a 3/2 legendary Human Advisor for one generic and two black mana with deathtouch. Whenever any player loses life, that player mills that many cards — and when he dies, you draw a card for each graveyard containing seven or more cards. He's a natural fit in mill strategies, punishing opponents for taking any damage while stocking graveyards for his death trigger.

This is Magic's second visit to Tolkien's world after The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth in 2023, which became one of the best-selling Magic sets ever. The Hobbit set is already generating significant hype, and the Storied mechanic gives it a mechanical identity distinct from its predecessor. With prerelease events less than a month away, expect the full card gallery to fill out quickly.
