Netflix's Ravenloft series will tell Strahd's origin story, with Alfonso Cuarón producing

Netflix is developing a live-action prestige series called Ravenloft, based on the Dungeons & Dragons gothic horror setting — and it has some serious creative firepower behind it. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Azkaban, is on board as executive producer alongside writer and executive producer John August.

According to Deadline, the show is described as a prestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance. The series will focus on the origin story of Strahd von Zarovich — D&D's iconic vampire Darklord — tracing his arc from tragic antihero to one of the most notorious villains in the game's history. The official description promises character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue set across Ravenloft's Domains of Dread, the wider cursed realm that Strahd and other Darklords call home.

Curse of Strahd, the tabletop module the series draws from, is one of the most beloved D&D campaigns ever published — a gothic sandbox set in the fog-choked land of Barovia, where Strahd stalks players, manipulates them emotionally, and generally makes everyone's life miserable in the most compelling way possible. Cuarón's involvement feels genuinely fitting: Prisoner of Azkaban is widely regarded as the darkest and most atmospheric of the Harry Potter films, with exactly the kind of grey, moody visual language that Ravenloft demands.

The big question is whether Netflix will let the creative team actually execute on the darker, more character-driven tone the premise needs — recent game adaptations have had mixed results when executive interference gets involved. If the show sticks to Strahd's genuinely tragic backstory and leans into the gothic horror rather than sanding it down, there's real potential here.
