Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is a real-time tactical fleet simulator set in space, released in 2004. PC Gamer gave it 83% back in April 2005, and it currently sits at 4.4 out of 5 on GOG from user reviews. The premise is classic sci-fi: 60 years after humanity's first colony ship, Noah's Ark, meets disaster, an uneasy truce between solar system megacorps collapses when a startling discovery drags young captain Marcus Cromwell into a new war. Missions are strung together through a branching narrative that keeps moving even if you lose a battle — Wing Commander-style — and the GOG version includes a fully documented mod kit with a model viewer, sample assets, and modding guidelines.

Nexus sits in a lineage of late-90s and early-2000s space strategy games — think Homeworld's cinematic fleet combat crossed with some of Freespace's aesthetic DNA. It never became a household name, but it built a loyal following among fans of the genre and has aged reasonably well visually for a 20-year-old title.
