Nintendo Switch 2 may be getting a new screen to fix ghosting — still LCD, not OLED

Photos of a redesigned Nintendo Switch 2 display have surfaced online, with fans hoping the new panel addresses the ghosting issues some players have reported since the console launched. The images first appeared on a Chinese resale site and were flagged by Nintendo Patents Watch on Bluesky.

The new screen is reportedly manufactured by Sharp and matches the launch model's 7.9-inch size and 1080p LCD spec — so this is not the OLED upgrade some fans have been holding out for. Nintendo hasn't officially acknowledged any display change, and it's unclear when units with the new panel will reach shelves or whether Nintendo will announce the swap publicly. One theory is that the change is tied to EU legislation requiring user-accessible batteries for self-replacement, which may be prompting a broader internal redesign anyway. Console makers have historically swapped components quietly unless the change affects form factor, performance, or price.

Nintendo chose LCD over OLED for Switch 2 despite the previous Switch OLED model, defending the decision by arguing its LCD is higher quality than the one in the original Switch — and the choice almost certainly helped keep component costs down at a time when console prices are already climbing. That context makes a silent mid-cycle screen revision plausible: manufacturers routinely source alternative panels from different suppliers without making a public announcement. Whether Sharp's panel actually reduces the ghosting effect remains to be seen.
