Nintendo's 30% Switch sale is funded by tariff refunds it refused to pass back to players

Nintendo of America is running a Customer Appreciation Sale from September 13 to 26, offering 30% off dozens of Switch games, DLC, accessories, amiibo, and apparel. The discounts apply across the Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Store online, and participating retailers — Nintendo is calling it one of its largest promotions ever, though a full product list hasn't been published yet.

The awkward part: Nintendo says the sale is "made possible in part by tariff-related refunds." The company claims it absorbed most tariff-related costs itself rather than passing them to consumers, but the refunds it received after US tariffs were ruled illegal have helped fund this promotion. That framing lands a bit rough given Nintendo's earlier position — when the courts struck down the tariffs, Nintendo argued customers were not entitled to any refunds for purchases made at the inflated prices, saying buyers had received "exactly what they bargained and paid for." So the money isn't going back to wallets; it's going toward a sale.

Nintendo had already raised prices on some Switch products globally, citing tariffs alongside rising component costs, labour, and shipping. The company also maintained it absorbed tariff costs on the Switch 2 rather than directly passing them on. That context makes the Customer Appreciation framing a tough sell for some fans — the reaction to the announcement has been decidedly mixed.

The sale lands during a busy stretch for Nintendo: two back-to-back Directs just aired, preorders opened for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Metroid Ravenous, a 40th Anniversary Zelda Switch 2 was announced, and a new firmware update added VRR support for Switch 2 in TV mode. Whether the sale softens any lingering frustration over the refund situation remains to be seen.
