Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 hit Switch 2 on October 1 — no upgrade path, no save transfer

Square Enix announced Switch 2 editions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II, both landing October 1 — timed to the series' eighth anniversary. The games get improved frame rates and resolution on the new hardware, but existing Switch owners are getting a raw deal.

Both titles release separately in digital and physical formats, plus a digital-only bundle. The catch: Square Enix confirmed in fine print at the end of the announcement trailer that there is no upgrade path from the Switch versions to the Switch 2 editions. On top of that, save data is not compatible between the two versions — so even if you bought the Switch 2 edition, you'd be starting from scratch. Octopath Traveler originally launched in 2018, and Octopath Traveler II in 2023, both at $60 on Switch.

Square Enix's upgrade policy across its Switch 2 lineup is all over the place. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster are Switch 2-exclusive releases with no path from Switch 1. Meanwhile, the Dragon Quest remakes and Final Fantasy Tactics offer free Switch 1-to-Switch 2 upgrades, and Romancing SaGa 2 charges $10 for the bump. The inconsistency makes it genuinely hard to track what you're getting as a returning fan. For two games that are purely getting a visual and performance polish — no new content — the lack of any upgrade option is a tough sell.

If you don't own either game yet, waiting for the October 1 Switch 2 versions makes obvious sense. But for anyone already sitting on a Switch copy, the only real incentive Square Enix is offering is a slightly sharper picture — and a full-price bill to go with it. Both games are currently on sale on Switch 1 if you'd rather save money and skip the resolution bump entirely.
