Overwatch devs confirm Tracer is still the mascot, tease laser-eye hero, and reveal Doctrine details

At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard confirmed Tracer remains Overwatch's official mascot, revealed that Tracer once fired lasers from her eyes during early engine development, and hinted that a laser-eyed hero could one day make it into the game. The studio also detailed Doctrine, the game's newest support hero, and teased a big 2027 Spotlight event.

Game director Aaron Keller told GameSpot he has been playing Overwatch since late 2013, back when Tracer literally shot two red lines straight out of the camera position because the game had no projectile system yet. Associate game director Alec Dawson didn't rule out a future hero built around that concept — "I think shooting lasers out of your eyes is pretty cool. Yeah, we can figure something out," he said. On the mascot question, art director Dion Rogers was unambiguous: "Tracer is still the mascot for Overwatch. Very much. 'Tracer orange' is a quote the team uses all the time." Doctrine, Hero 54 and the ninth new hero released this year, is a vampire-themed support character from Zimbabwe with a history tied to Doomfist — he once built arms for Doomfist's family. Lead Hero Producer Kenny Hudson explained the concept came from narrative designer Miranda Moyer asking what a vampire would look like in the Overwatch universe. Season 5 will also bring a new map called Grimsvötn and substantial reworks for Sombra and Roadhog.

Overwatch has had an unusually packed 2026 — Blizzard announced five new heroes at the February Spotlight event and has shipped a new hero every season since, with Doctrine being the ninth. The game's story arc wraps up in Season 5, setting the stage for whatever Blizzard has planned for the 2027 Spotlight. Executive producer Ben Bell confirmed the next Spotlight won't follow the same formula as this year's, promising new gameplay, new heroes, and surprises.

Community reaction at BlizzCon was enthusiastic, with Bell describing the Play the Devs event on the floor as "humbling and awesome." With Doctrine nearly rounding out ten new heroes for the year and a fresh Spotlight on the horizon, Blizzard is clearly betting that momentum carries into 2027.
