Persona 4 Remake Reworks Yosuke to Better Reflect Modern Sensibilities

Atlus is revisiting one of Persona 4's most divisive characters for the upcoming revival, with the development team confirming that Yosuke Hanamura has been rethought to feel more appropriate for contemporary audiences.

The team described the changes as making Yosuke "a little more fitting for the world we live in now," though specific details about what exactly has been altered weren't spelled out. Yosuke has long been a complicated figure in the Persona 4 fanbase — a likeable lead party member whose writing also included jokes and attitudes toward women and gay characters that many players found uncomfortable even at the time of the original 2008 release.

Persona 4 originally launched on PS2 and later received the expanded Persona 4 Golden on PS Vita in 2012, which itself was eventually ported to PC, PS4, and other platforms. The series has a history of revisiting older entries — Persona 3 Reload in 2024 showed Atlus is willing to make meaningful updates to characters and story beats rather than delivering a straight port. How far the Yosuke changes go in the revival remains to be seen, but the framing suggests more than a cosmetic touch-up.
