Pokémon 30th Anniversary Card Set Is Bad News for Scalpers, Good News for Everyone Else

The Pokémon 30th Anniversary trading card set launched last week to the usual chaos — long lines in the U.S., ghost chairs left outside stores for days, and in the U.K., accusations that a minor celebrity jumped the queue and ignored purchase limits. Scalpers piled in expecting the same windfall they've seen from previous sets. It didn't go that way.

The Pokémon Company appears to have quietly engineered a scalper-unfriendly set by making rare cards significantly easier to pull. The only cards fetching low thousands of dollars are the three Mew cards — Red, Green, and Blue — which do carry a low drop rate. Everything else has collapsed well below $250 on the resale market, and most of the top 15 most valuable cards are sitting at around $100 or less. That's a dramatic drop compared to previous anniversary sets, where sought-after cards regularly commanded thousands.

For actual collectors, this is a win — most of the set is reachable without spending a fortune. For scalpers who bought up bulk stock expecting massive margins, it's a different story. On the r/PokeInvesting subreddit, the mood is grim. "2-3 years ago, quite literally on this subreddit, many people were anticipating the 30th anniversary as a bull catalyst for exit strategies for their investments," one user wrote. "The literal complete opposite happened." Another warned: "It'll crush even more when more and more people start dumping. It's gonna be a bloody mess."

Not everyone on r/PokeInvesting is panicking, though. User TommyC6852 argued the set is actually healthy for the hobby long-term: "This is a set that is a blast to open; and should be decently available for the common collector. At some point you want people to have fun... The more fun people have, the longer they stay in. The longer people stay engaged; the higher our investments will go." The next set, Mega Evolution – Delta Reign, is due as soon as November, giving the market its next test.
