Project Awakening Is Still in Development, 8 Years After Its PS4 Reveal

Cygames' open world RPG Project Awakening is still alive — the studio has confirmed the game remains in active development, eight years after its dramatic PS4 reveal trailer turned heads back in 2017.

No release date, platform details, or new footage were shared alongside the confirmation. The announcement amounts to a brief reassurance that the project hasn't been quietly cancelled, which given the silence over the past several years was a reasonable concern for anyone following it.

Project Awakening was first shown at a Sony PlayStation Press Conference in 2017, where its high-fidelity visuals and monster-hunting gameplay drew immediate comparisons to Monster Hunter and God of War. Cygames is best known in the West for Granblue Fantasy and its fighting game spin-off Granblue Fantasy Versus, but Project Awakening represented the studio's most ambitious console push — a full-scale action RPG built around large-scale boss encounters and an expansive open world. The game went almost completely dark after its initial reveal, with only occasional brief updates confirming it hadn't been shelved.

With no trailer, no release window, and no new details on the table, fans are left in much the same position as before — knowing the game exists, but little else. Whether a proper showing is coming at a future event remains to be seen.
