PS5 firmware update 26.04-13.40.00 is out, and it's just a stability patch

Sony pushed out a new PS5 firmware update — version 26.04-13.40.00 is live now, and it does almost nothing you'll notice. The patch notes are a single line: "We've improved system software performance and stability." That's the whole thing.

For context, the previous update, 26.03-13.20.00, actually had substance — it delivered an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) for PS5 Pro owners. Updates before that added an improved Friends Activity widget, a way to check your console's serial number, and a power saver mode for supported games. Sony regularly drops these quiet stability patches between the feature-heavy ones, and this is exactly that.

The timing is at least convenient, with a packed gaming season on the horizon. This week's showcases are expected to map out the second half of 2026, and September is already shaping up as a crowded release window for games trying to dodge GTA 6. Sony's flagship exclusive for the year is Marvel's Wolverine, and the recent State of Play trailer showed off detailed setpiece moments, character models, and — notably — Wolverine's impressively rendered body hair. Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are also in the pipeline, and it's still striking how much developers are squeezing out of hardware that's nearly six years old.
