Resident Evil 1 Remake reportedly entered pre-production last year

Insider Dusk Golem says a remake of the original Resident Evil quietly entered pre-production around August–September 2024 — nearly a year ago. The project is still early, and full production won't kick off until Capcom wraps development on Resident Evil Code: Veronica Remake.

Dusk Golem shared the update on X, clarifying that pre-production means a small core team doing initial concepting and prototyping — not a full studio push. That full push comes later. Complicating the release timeline further, the same insider says Resident Evil Zero Remake entered full production in late 2022, which likely positions it as the next remake after Veronica — pushing Resident Evil 1 Remake further down the queue. Veronica was announced in June and is targeting a 2027 release. If Capcom sticks to its pattern of alternating remakes with mainline entries, a Resident Evil 1 Remake realistically lands no earlier than 2029.

This isn't the first time Resident Evil 1 Remake has surfaced in leak circles. Back in May 2024, it was rumoured to be targeting a 2026 release to coincide with the series' 30th anniversary — that obviously didn't happen. Instead, Capcom shipped Resident Evil Requiem, a new mainline entry that sold six million copies by March 2026. The original Resident Evil was first remade for GameCube in 2002, then remastered for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in 2015. A modern remake is expected to follow the Resident Evil 2 Remake template — third-person over-the-shoulder camera, rebuilt mechanics — rather than the fixed-camera style of the GameCube version.

Dusk Golem has a mixed but generally credible track record: they correctly called the timing of several Resident Evil releases and revealed the existence of both the Zero and Code: Veronica remakes before official announcements. Still, nothing here is confirmed by Capcom, and given how early pre-production is, an official announcement is likely still years away.
