Rust's Common Ground update adds rentable apartments, player-run shops, and a new clan system

Facepunch Studios has dropped the July 2026 update for Rust, titled Common Ground, and it's a big one. Two new monuments, a clan system, Softcore mode changes, and a fresh set of animations all land at once.

The headline addition is the Apartment Complex monument — a place where players fresh into a wipe can rent a room instead of scrambling to build from scratch. Talk to the receptionist in the lobby, pick a tier from basement squat to penthouse suite, and you're in. Every room comes with basics like a bed, stove, and workbench, but higher tiers stack on more storage, furnaces, and better gear. The catch: you have to feed scrap into the slot next to your door every 24 hours. Miss a payment and you're evicted — possessions seized, no appeal. It gets worse. A master key is hidden somewhere on the island, and whoever finds it can unlock any occupied room for five minutes. A basement guard apparently knows which rooms are worth hitting, so expect to get tipped off — or tipped on. The same master key works on the shops inside the complex's small marketplace, where players can rent stalls to sell items to other residents. Shops require a non-refundable upfront scrap fee plus an ongoing per-hour scrap cost, and you need enough scrap to cover at least 12 hours before you can open. After a shop has been running for six hours, another player can take it over by paying 2x the upfront and hourly costs — and that multiplier keeps climbing (3x, 4x, and so on) until someone runs out of scrap and the shop resets.

The new clan system is a step up from Rust's existing team mechanic. Clans support more members, distinct roles and permissions, a dedicated clan chat channel, and a message-of-the-day board. Members' locations show up on the map when they're nearby. Clan Tables are where you set everything up and manage it. The system is locked out of hardcore mode entirely. Softcore mode also gets meaningful changes: resource gathering from animals, food, ore, and wood now runs at a 2x multiplier, and base raids are restricted to a 6–9 PM window in the server's local time — provided you're within a Tool Cupboard's radius. On top of all that, sprint animations for rifles and one-handed melee weapons have been updated, and 27 new wallpapers are available for base decoration.

Common Ground is live now. The update also includes Twitch drops and a range of bug fixes and general improvements. Given how much Rust has evolved — from bare-bones survival sandbox to a game where you can now pay rent, run a shop, and get burgled by a key-wielding griefer — the community reaction has been predictably entertained, with PC Gamer noting the whole thing is "terrifyingly realistic."
