Scott Pilgrim EX: Back in the Band DLC adds Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau

Tribute Games has released Scott Pilgrim EX – Back in the Band, a DLC that brings three new playable characters to the beat-em-up: Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau, completing the Sex Bob-omb lineup.

The studio's 2D animators Samantha Lhoir and Artem Samoilov led the character work, starting with the updated Character Select screen. Each idle animation was built as what Samoilov calls "a tiny performance" — Kim Pine projects quiet confidence with a hint of attitude, Knives Chau looks coiled and ready to move, and Stephen Stills has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it expression of surprise tucked into his animation. Tribute's philosophy is to layer in fleeting emotional details — a quick facial expression, a secondary motion, a subtle visual effect — that players may never consciously register but that make characters feel genuinely alive. Concept sketches established silhouette, posture, and personality before the team refined everything into pixel art faithful to Bryan Lee O'Malley's original designs. Knives Chau got the most distinctive mechanical treatment: she's built as a fast hit-and-run fighter who uses her scarf as both a visual flourish and a reach extender, chaining rapid knife strikes before darting away.

Scott Pilgrim EX is Tribute Games' expanded edition of the 2010 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, itself a cult classic beat-em-up that spent years off storefronts before returning in 2021. Tribute has been steadily building out EX with new content, and Back in the Band is the most substantial character addition yet — rounding out a roster that previously left several core cast members unplayable.

Back in the Band is available now alongside Scott Pilgrim EX. No pricing details were included in the announcement, but all three characters — Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau — are playable immediately on launch.
