Sony is shutting down the PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Store

Sony has confirmed it's closing the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, with the first shutdowns hitting select markets as early as August 2026. The announcement came alongside the separate — and arguably bigger — news that Sony is going all-digital for PS5 games from January 2028 onwards.

The rollout is staggered by region. Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua lose PS3 store access in August 2026. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries follow in late 2026, though Sony hasn't specified exactly which ones or when. Everyone else — all remaining countries — loses access to both the PS3 and Vita stores in July 2027. Sony senior director Sid Shuman confirmed that once a store closes, new purchases are off the table, but players can still download previously bought content "for the foreseeable future" after the closure date. Shuman framed the decision as a resource shift: "As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms."

This kind of move isn't unprecedented — Nintendo shut down the 3DS and Wii U eShops in March 2023 — but Sony is taking a softer approach by keeping download access open post-closure rather than cutting everything off at once. The PS3 launched in 2006, sold 87.4 million units over its lifetime, and has been on the market for nearly two decades. The Vita, launched in December 2011, never found the same footing — estimates put its lifetime sales at around 10–15 million units, roughly a tenth of what the Nintendo DS moved. Sony never officially confirmed a sales figure for the handheld.

What makes the timing notable is the context: Sony dropped both announcements on the same day, pairing the legacy store closures with the news that physical PS5 games are being phased out entirely by 2028. Together, the moves paint a clear picture of where Sony sees its future — and it's fully digital. For PS3 and Vita players, July 2027 is the hard deadline to make any remaining purchases before the storefronts go dark for good.
