Sony patents AI system that writes on-the-fly patches to fix PlayStation problems

Sony has filed a patent for an AI-powered tech support agent that would monitor your PlayStation for hardware and software issues and use a large language model to generate patches on the spot — either fixing problems automatically or flagging them for Sony's engineers.

The system would watch for red flags in real time, then write and deploy repair code without any user input. The patent itself, surfaced by Patentlyze, acknowledges the risk directly: "an automated system sending repair instructions to a device in your living room needs careful guardrails so a small hiccup does not become a larger one." That's a real concern — an LLM with insufficient training or guardrails could misdiagnose a minor issue and push a patch that bricks the console entirely. There's also a privacy angle: for the agent to monitor everything effectively, it would likely need broad access to system data, and without a clear opt-out, that means potentially everything running on your PlayStation could be visible to it.

Patents don't always become products, but the timing lines up with where Sony is heading. The PlayStation 6 is widely expected to drop physical disc support entirely, which points toward an always-on internet connection as a baseline requirement. If that's the case, plugging in an AI monitoring layer becomes technically straightforward — the infrastructure would already be there. Sony has been steadily expanding its software and services ecosystem, and remote diagnostics would fit neatly into that direction.
