Star Wars Unlimited designer says players are sleeping on The Stranger

Star Wars Unlimited designer John Leo is calling out one underrated villain card that the competitive scene has largely ignored — The Stranger, aka Qimir from The Acolyte. While the current meta after the 2026 Galactic Championship in Las Vegas leans hard into aggressive bounty hunter decks built around leaders like Cad Bane and Boba Fett, Leo thinks this Legendary unit from set seven, A Lawless Time, deserves a second look.

The Stranger is a vigilance, cunning, and villainy unit with a deceptively modest 1 power and 7 HP — but his kit makes those base stats almost irrelevant. His Grit keyword gives him +1/+0 for every point of damage he takes, meaning he snowballs fast in a fight. He also has Ambush, letting him enter play ready and immediately attack. The twist is his unique ability: the defending enemy unit attacks first in combat. That sounds like a liability, but it's actually the engine — the incoming damage fuels Grit, turning every trade into a potential blowout. Leo credits the card's design to his partner Joe O'Neill, who apparently came up with the concept in the shower. "It creates these really explosive gameplay moments," Leo said. "He's got the Ambush keyword as well, so there are these great trades you can do, or you can set them up with certain leaders for really explosive two-for-ones."

The Stranger debuted in A Lawless Time, Unlimited's seventh set, and draws directly from his portrayal in Leslye Headland's The Acolyte — the 2024 Disney Plus series that ran for one season before being cancelled. The card captures his fighting style well: a character who gets more dangerous the more enemies pile on. In Unlimited, pairing him with the right leader, base, events, and upgrades can turn him into a unit that shreds both enemy units and bases in quick, volatile bursts.

Despite Leo's assessment that players are sleeping on the card, The Stranger is currently selling for close to $20 on TCGPlayer — which suggests at least some of the community has already caught on. Whether he breaks into competitive play more broadly may depend on what comes next: set nine, Homeworlds, launches October 9, and a shifting meta could be exactly what The Stranger needs to move from sleeper pick to staple.
