Star Wars Zero Company has one Jedi — and you can permanently lose her

Star Wars Zero Company launches next month, and developer Bit Reactor has confirmed a detail that will make reckless players sweat: there is exactly one Jedi Operator in the entire game, and if she dies, she's gone for good.

That Jedi is Tel-Rea, a Padawan-class Operator. Lead designer James Brawley answered the question directly on the game's Discord server: "Tel-Rea is the only Jedi Padawan class Operator in Star Wars Zero Company — be careful that nothing happens to her!" Unlike other Operator classes, where you can recruit replacements if someone falls in battle, there is no backup Jedi waiting in the wings. Permadeath is a core feature of Zero Company, and while some difficulty settings let you turn it off, players who go in with permadeath enabled and lose Tel-Rea are left without a Jedi for the rest of the run. Bit Reactor has noted that authored characters are protected during their story introductions, but once they're fully integrated into your squad, they're as vulnerable as anyone else.

The decision wasn't unanimous inside the studio. Narrative lead Aaron Contreras told PC Gamer there were internal arguments about letting permadeath limit how much authored characters could contribute to the story — Contreras himself pushed back against it. He ultimately lost that debate, and by his own admission, "it was good that I did." Bit Reactor's approach reflects a deliberate design philosophy: in the timeline Zero Company occupies, Jedi are supposed to be exceedingly rare, and making Tel-Rea irreplaceable reinforces that. The studio clearly wants the weight of the Star Wars setting to carry through into the mechanics, not just the aesthetics — a single Jedi feels precious in a way that a roster of them never would.

With the game out next month, players will find out quickly whether that design bet pays off or just leads to a lot of frustrated reloads. The stakes around Tel-Rea are now very much part of the pre-release conversation.
