The Last of Us Season 3 is likely the final season, HBO says again

HBO boss Casey Bloys has reiterated that The Last of Us Season 3, arriving in 2027, is expected to be the show's last. Speaking to Deadline, Bloys said showrunner Craig Mazin "has planned it as the final season" — echoing his January comment that wrapping up with Season 3 "certainly seems that way."

The picture is still a little fluid. Earlier in 2025, Bloys noted that Mazin was still deciding between one longer final season or two additional seasons, saying he was "following Craig's lead." That question apparently hasn't been settled yet. It's also a notable shift from Mazin's own earlier position, when he suggested four seasons would be needed to properly close out the story.

The Last of Us adapts Naughty Dog's acclaimed PlayStation games — the first season covered the original 2013 game, and Season 2 tackles The Last of Us Part II. Season 3 would presumably complete that story. One significant change heading into the new season: Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, who co-wrote and directed episodes in earlier seasons, has stepped away from the show. Druckmann says he left to focus on Naughty Dog's game projects — he's currently directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and is likely also involved in The Last of Us Part III if that game is in development.

With Mazin now steering the ship solo and the 2027 window confirmed, the main open question is whether Season 3 runs longer than usual to compensate for being the finale. No episode count or specific premiere date has been announced.
