Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 is joining Street Fighter 6 with her own Materia system

Capcom confirmed at Summer Game Fest that Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII is coming to Street Fighter 6 as a guest character. She's part of the game's year 4 roster expansion and arrives with a brand-new gameplay system built around her Materia powers.

Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama said Tifa's Materia abilities have been "reimagined as a new gameplay system" and that "everything from her design to movement has been rebuilt as Tifa the Street Fighter." Final Fantasy VII director Naoki Hamaguchi was on stage for the reveal and explained the thinking: "Tifa is a character loved by players all around the world. That's exactly why this was done to bring to life a Tifa who truly fights within the world of Street Fighter 6." A reveal teaser is already out, but her character model and actual gameplay footage are being held back for a later date. Tifa lands in "early" 2027 — ahead of her, Yasmine joins on August 3, Arjun follows in the fall, and Bosch arrives in spring 2027.

This isn't Tifa's first fighting game appearance. She and Cloud both showed up in Ehrgeiz on PS1, and the Final Fantasy guest character pipeline has been active ever since — Cloud made it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while Noctis from FFXV and Clive from FFXVI both appeared in Tekken. Tekken 8 fans had been pushing hard for Tifa specifically, but series creator Katsuhiro Harada said in 2024 that nothing had been decided on guest characters. He has since left Bandai Namco to start his own studio.

The Tekken community didn't miss the irony. One Reddit post summed it up: "Harada quit Tekken because he couldn't get Tifa." Street Fighter 6 beat everyone to the punch, and fans will have to wait until early 2027 to actually play her.
