Valve confirms no Steam Machine exclusives — the whole PC catalog is the point

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais has shut down months of fan speculation about whether the company would use a major title — Half-Life 3 being the obvious candidate — to push the newly released Steam Machine. Speaking to Bloomberg, Griffais said Valve considers "having the whole PC catalog as our 'launch exclusive,'" and that restricting where people can play a game is "not a great model, at least for us."

The speculation made sense on the surface: Valve previously launched Half-Life: Alyx as a deliberate showcase for the Valve Index, so the idea of a Steam Machine tie-in game wasn't entirely far-fetched. But Griffais pushed back on the premise entirely. The Steam Machine runs Linux, connects to Steam, and is designed as an open system — owners can install Windows on it if they want. There is no technical mechanism to make a game exclusive to it in any meaningful sense, short of pre-installing something on the hardware itself.

Valve has never actually shipped an exclusive in the traditional sense. Even Half-Life: Alyx launched with support for competing VR headsets. The company's entire philosophy has been built around open platforms and broad access, which is why its push for Linux compatibility through Proton has been such a sustained effort over the years. Griffais pointing to the Steam catalog as the "exclusive" is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it's also just accurate — if Valve ever ships Half-Life 3, it's going on Steam, and Steam runs on everything.

The comments won't fully quiet the Half-Life 3 crowd, but they do make clear that Valve isn't planning to use hardware launches as leverage to force players onto specific platforms. Whether that's reassuring or just a reminder that Half-Life 3 remains firmly in the realm of speculation is probably down to how optimistic you're feeling.
