Warframe: Tau revealed at Tennocon – a noir solar system inspired by Blade Runner and The Sopranos

Digital Extremes closed out Tennocon Live with the reveal of Warframe: Tau, the game's next major update. A roughly 30-minute trailer introduced the Tau system and its centrepiece location, Fornax – a ringed city wrapped around one of Tau's planets – dripping with film noir atmosphere and a heavy narrative focus on addiction. The update is coming later this year.

The demo spotlights Brysko, a new detective Warframe voiced by Matthew Mercer – known for Cole Cassidy in Overwatch and as the driving force behind Critical Role. Brysko carries the Core Cracker revolver, throwable trading cards, and has a dog companion (confirmed in a pre-show dev talk, though not shown in the trailer itself). Fornax's streets are flooded with oily black rain that apparently revives the dead and mentally damages anyone exposed too long, while Sentients in the city are shown abusing The Bloom, an organic drug-like substance central to the story. Creative director Rebecca Ford told Eurogamer that Fornax was inspired by "Boardwalk Empire, Blade Runner, and even a little Sopranos." The update launches with two regions, new mission types, and a new spin on the Steel Path difficulty toggle – essentially a new game plus variant for the Tau system. There's also a card mini-game that ties directly into the vice-and-exploitation themes running through the narrative.

Warframe has been running for over 12 years, and the Tau update marks a significant shift in setting – the game's players have spent that entire time in the Origin system. Ford described Fornax as sitting "in-between" the open-world design of 2017's Plains of Eidolon and the more structured zones Digital Extremes has built since, with multiple player hubs carrying distinct aesthetics. The addiction themes aren't just narrative window dressing: Ford said many team members in London, Ontario have personal experience with the subject. "The core question is 'what are you willing to bet?' because as many of us know, addiction can take many different forms," she said. "Many members of the team have seen firsthand what overcoming that struggle looks like; it's very close to our hearts."

No firm release window beyond "later this year" has been given. The dog companion – confirmed but absent from the Tennocon demo – is presumably still in the pipeline for launch.
