Witcher Creator Confirms New Novel for 2027, Open to More Unconventional Adaptations

Andrzej Sapkowski, the author behind The Witcher books, has confirmed he is already writing his next novel and is targeting a 2027 completion date. Speaking at the Copernicon convention in Torun, Poland, and in a separate interview with IGN alongside his English translator David French, Sapkowski was characteristically direct about where the franchise is headed.

The next novel will focus on Geralt of Rivia — Sapkowski shot down a fan question at Copernicon about centering a book on another character like Yennefer of Vengerberg. Whether it is another prequel in the vein of Crossroads of Ravens remains unconfirmed, but his comment when asked if there is room to explore Geralt's formative years further — "Room? Sky is the limit" — strongly suggests that direction. Sapkowski also told IGN he is considering returning to the short story format that launched the series, noting that writing a good short story under 8,000 words is "much more difficult than writing a novel" but that pulling it off is "proof of writing mastery." If he hits his 2027 target, Polish readers could see the book in late 2027 or 2028, with English translations likely following in late 2028 or 2029 — a four-year turnaround that would be his fastest since The Lady of the Lake in 1999.

Crossroads of Ravens, the most recent Witcher novel, arrived in English last September and follows an 18-year-old Geralt in his earliest days as a monster hunter. Sapkowski, who is nearly 80, described the challenge of writing a teenage protagonist as stepping into the shoes of someone decades younger — though he noted he still remembers "some experiences I shall never forget" from his own youth. The Witcher franchise is in an unusually active phase across every medium right now: The Witcher 3: Remastered arrives September 29, the surprise expansion Songs of the Past is planned for 2027, and The Witcher 4 — starring Ciri — is targeting 2028. Full-cast audio drama adaptations of the books are rolling out through 2026 and 2027, starting with Crossroads of Ravens and followed by The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny in November. Netflix's live-action series is also heading into its fifth and final season, now expected in 2027.

On the question of future adaptations, Sapkowski was typically dry: asked about experimental formats like a major stage production, he pointed out that two Witcher musicals already exist and simply said he is "open to suggestions — even unconventional ones." With a new novel in progress, short stories potentially on the way, and a packed slate of games, shows, and audio dramas ahead, the Witcher universe shows no signs of contracting anytime soon.
