Xbox lets you convert physical games to digital licenses starting August 31

Microsoft announced at Gamescom that Xbox players will be able to redeem digital licenses for their physical game discs — effectively converting their physical library into a digital one. The feature rolls out to Xbox Insider members first on August 31.

Xbox's Jason Ronald confirmed the details during the broadcast: when you insert a supported physical disc, your console will prompt you to redeem a digital license. Once redeemed, you no longer need the disc in the drive to play — though you can still use it if you want. Those digitally unlocked games also plug into the Play Anywhere system, meaning you can play them across platforms and stream them via the cloud. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma followed up on Twitter, saying the feature will launch with "thousands" of titles spanning Xbox history, with more added over time. Ronald framed it as a long-term commitment: "We just really view this as another step in making sure that your library is protected; it can move with you as technologies and formats change."

The timing is pointed. Sony recently confirmed that PlayStation games launching in 2028 and beyond will no longer be manufactured on disc — a decision that landed badly with collectors and physical media fans. Microsoft's announcement lands in direct contrast to that, positioning Xbox as the platform that actually cares about preserving what players have already bought. Xbox has been pushing game preservation and backwards compatibility harder than any other major platform holder for years, so this disc-to-digital conversion feature is a natural extension of that philosophy. It also comes at a useful moment for Microsoft's PR, given the company has faced criticism over mass layoffs across Xbox Game Studios earlier this year.

The implicit read here is that Xbox may eventually drop disc drives too — but at least players won't be left with a shelf of coasters when that day comes. Community reaction has been broadly positive, especially set against the backdrop of Sony's much less player-friendly approach to the same inevitable digital transition.
