Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches July 9 — a full remake with ray tracing, revamped combat, and PS5 Pro enhancements

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced — Ubisoft Singapore's full ground-up remake of the 2013 pirate classic — launches on July 9. Built on the latest version of the Anvil engine, it's not a remaster but a complete rebuild, modernizing nearly every system while keeping Edward Kenway's story and world intact.

On the technical side, the remake runs at 60 fps on PC and offers multiple graphics modes on PS5 and PS5 Pro, all with HDR, Dolby Atmos, and DualSense haptic feedback. Ray-Traced Global Illumination is enabled across every graphics mode on both PS5 variants, while Ray-Traced Specular Reflections are limited to Balanced and Fidelity modes on base PS5 but available in all modes on PS5 Pro. A micropolygon geometry pipeline replaces traditional level-of-detail switching, using the PS5's SSD to stream and render geometry continuously — no more pop-in as you move through the world. PS5 Pro owners get additional GPU headroom for higher fidelity and more stable performance across all modes. Beyond visuals, the remake overhauls melee and naval combat, updates freerunning with smoother transitions and faster direction changes, and adopts the discovery-focused map design introduced in Assassin's Creed Valhalla — points of interest only appear once you observe them from sync points or get close, keeping the map clean rather than icon-cluttered.

Black Flag originally launched on PS3 in 2013 and as a PS4 launch title, and it's spent the years since sitting near the top of fan rankings for the series. Edward Kenway remains one of the most popular protagonists in Assassin's Creed history, and the game spawned two spin-offs and directly inspired Skull and Bones. Ubisoft Singapore, the studio behind the naval systems in the original, is leading the remake — a fitting choice given how central ship combat is to Black Flag's identity. The remake also draws visual comparisons to Assassin's Creed Shadows, sharing similarly impressive wind, water, and weather effects.

Early reviews praise the visual leap and the gameplay refinements, though some note that the freerunning still carries a little of the original era's stickiness — Edward occasionally commits to the wrong path when the angle is slightly off. The core of what made Black Flag beloved — the writing, the characters, the open Caribbean — is described as intact and enhanced.
