Black Ops 2 on PS4/PS5 may flash a false ban notice — here's how to tell if you're actually banned

Activision has warned Black Ops 2 players on PS4 and PS5 that a backend update may briefly show an account ban message even when no actual ban has been issued. The official Call of Duty Updates account on X confirmed the false positive is a side effect of legacy systems being updated to improve match integrity.

According to the post, the message appears when players are removed from a match or session so the game's systems can apply updated account data. The quick test to know if you're actually banned is straightforward: if you can reconnect after seeing the message, you're fine — if you can't, the ban is real. Activision also confirmed it is issuing genuine bans against accounts found to have illegitimately obtained Prestige levels or violated terms of service through account manipulation.

Prestige hacks have been the dominant exploit in Black Ops 2 since the PS4 and PS5 ports launched. Hackers can modify a lobby so every player in it instantly hits Max Prestige — the game's highest rank — just by joining. That strips legitimate players of their progression and can trigger a cascade of other problems. Separate hacks can also de-rank rival players, locking them out of weapons and features they had already unlocked. The ports launched with these same exploits that have plagued the original PS3 and Xbox 360 versions for years, and Activision has been steadily patching them out of the newer builds.

The most recent patch — which also landed last week — addressed several other issues alongside the security work: mid-match lobby backfilling was improved, input delay on 120Hz and higher displays was reduced, and Zombies matches will now prioritize PS5 hosts instead of falling back to PS4 hosts. The ports have faced criticism for technical shortcomings and pricing since launch, but the steady stream of updates suggests Activision is actively working to bring them up to standard.
